As we move closer to the WordCamp Lira 2024, it is vital for those in distant places to start planning how they will make the journey to Lira city. WordCamp Lira 2024 shall take place on August 24, 2024 at Lira Town College, in Lira city, in northern Uganda.

In this article, we explore the various transport options available for our prospective WordCamp attendees.

Kampala to Lira

The distance between Kampala and Lira is approximately 360 kilometres (via Karuma), and the journey typically takes 5-7 hours by road, depending on traffic, vehicle and road conditions.

Due to ongoing repair works at Karuma bridge, the northern route has been closed to big trucks, and buses. Recently, it was announced that two weeks from now, the bridge shall be closed to all traffic. This travelers with two alternative routes – Eastern route via Soroti, and then Western route via Masindi.

Traveling from Kampala to Lira City in Uganda can be done using several means of transportation.  Below are the four main options.

  1. Bus:

Direct Buses: Several bus companies operate direct services between Kampala and Lira. Companies like YY Coaches, Goodluck, Acanadiro and Felister Bus are popular choices. These buses offer comfortable seating and are relatively affordable. Currently, buses are charging between UGX 40,000 – UGX 50,000.

Booking: Tickets can be booked at bus terminals in Kampala (YY terminal or Namayiba bus park) or through various online platforms.

Please note: Currently, most buses are passing via Eastern route (Jinja, Pallisa, Kumi, Soroti), because Karuma bridge is closed to heavy vehicles & trucks. Only small cars & taxis are allowed to cross the bridge.

2. Taxi/Matatu:

Shared Taxis/Matatus: These are minibuses that operate on a shared basis, picking up and dropping off passengers along the way. They are a common mode of transport but may be less comfortable compared to buses.

Departure Points: Shared taxis can be found at major taxi parks in Kampala, such as the Old Taxi Park or the New Taxi Park.

3. Private Car Hire:

Car Rentals: Renting a car offers flexibility and convenience. Several car rental companies in Kampala provide vehicles for hire. This option is more expensive but allows for a more personalized travel experience. You can also choose to drive yourself or hire a driver.

4. Ride-Sharing Services:

Carpooling: Platforms like Twende Uganda allow for carpooling services, where you can share a ride with someone traveling to the same destination. This can be a cost-effective and environmentally friendly option.

For a comfortable and safe journey, it’s advisable to choose reputable bus companies or car hire services.

Gulu to Lira

Traveling from Gulu to Lira in Uganda is relatively straightforward, as the distance between the two cities is about 130 kilometres, and takes about 1 hour 30 minutes. This means you can leave Gulu at 06:00am and arrive at 07:30am just in time for the WordCamp. The transport fare is UGX 20,000, and you can return the same day.  

Soroti to Lira

Just like Gulu, traveling from Soroti to Lira is very easy, with several transportation options available. But the quickest way is by taxi. The distance from Soroti to Lira is approximately 110 kilometres and takes about 1 hour.  You should be able to make return journey same day.

Dokolo, Alebtong, Oyam, Otuke

For attendees hailing from Dokolo, Alebtong, Oyam and Otuke, boda bodas (motorcycle taxis) can be an option. However, you are bound to be delayed if there happens to be rain in the morning.

Conclusion

For buses, it’s recommended to book your tickets in advance to secure your spot, especially if you intend to use night buses/taxis.  For those who are resilient, you can choose to travel to Lira at night reach in the morning, and travel back at night again.
