Scheduled for August 29–30, 2026, at Lira Town College, this year’s WordCamp promises to be an unforgettable gathering of WordPress enthusiasts, developers, bloggers, tech creatives, and digital innovators.
To ensure you arrive relaxed and ready to connect, we’ve put together a comprehensive travel guide detailing the best transport options to the heart of Northern Uganda.
🚗 Route Guide: Kampala to Lira
The distance between Kampala and Lira is approximately 360 kilometers via Karuma, typically taking 5 to 7 hours by road depending on traffic, your choice of vehicle, and road conditions.
Travelers can choose between two main routes:
- The Greater Northern Route (Recommended): Kampala – Karuma – Kamdini – Lira.
- The Eastern Route: Kampala – Jinja – Soroti – Lira (approximately 425 km, ideal if you want a scenic drive through the east).
Here are the four primary ways to make the trip from Kampala:
1. Bus Services
Several reliable bus companies operate direct daily routes between Kampala and Lira, including YY Coaches, Goodluck, Acanadiro, and Felister Buses. They offer a comfortable, high-capacity travel experience at highly affordable rates.
- Fare: Currently ranges between UGX 30,000 and UGX 35,000.
- Booking: Tickets can be purchased directly at the Kampala terminals (such as the YY Coaches Terminal or Namayiba Bus Park) or booked via various online ticketing platforms.
2. Shared Taxis (Matatus)
These 14-seater minibuses operate on a shared basis, picking up and dropping off passengers along the highway. While they offer frequent departures, they generally provide less legroom and comfort than large buses on long-haul journeys.
- Departure Points: Major taxi hubs in Kampala, including the Old Taxi Park and the New Taxi Park.
3. Private Car Hire
Renting a vehicle gives you ultimate flexibility, allowing you to travel on your own schedule and stop at scenic landmarks like Karuma Falls.
- Cost: Rates vary by vehicle type but average around UGX 800,000 for a multi-day trip (available for self-drive or with a professional driver).
4. Ride-Sharing & Carpooling
Carpooling via digital platforms like Twende Uganda, or coordinating with fellow techies in local WordPress WhatsApp groups, is an eco-friendly and cost-effective option. It’s also an excellent way to network with other attendees before the event even kicks off!
